"Anything Can Happen" at the 2005 MTV Video Music Awards
Stephanie Cole - Clear Channel Online Music & Radio
Rain, wind and category 5 Hurricane Katrina were not enough to stop the biggest night in music ... the 2005 MTV Music Awards.
The host of the wildest party in muy caliente Miami, hip-hop mogul "Diddy," made his grand entrance to Miami's American Airlines Arena by controlling massive and elaborate water effects and fireworks, as he prepared the crowd for an exciting night.
"Diddy" made it known that the theme of the 2005 VMAs was "anything can happen!" He didn't disappoint by giving a random guy in the audience a very expensive Jacob the Jeweler watch, having an impromptu dance-off with R&B singer Omarion, introducing a surprise performance by rapper MC Hammer and conducting an orchestra, which did a medley of the late Notorious B.I.G.'s famous hits.
Big VMA winner Green Day opened the 2005 VMAs with their hit song "Boulevard of Broken Dreams," which they won the Best Group Video award for during the pre-show. The trio, dressed in all black, performed on a dreary set complete with tons of fog and balls of fire.
Kelly Clarkson and Kanye West received the first two awards of the night. The American Idol winner, who closed out the show with her performance of "Since U Been Gone", was presently surprised when she was handed the Best Female Video award, beating out superstar Mariah Carey and No Doubt star Gwen Stefani. Chicago-bred producer/rapper looked very pleased as he was given his VMA for his emotional and groundbreaking "Jesus Walks" video.
Thespians Kristen Dunst and Orlando Bloom handed Green Day one of their seven Moonmen of the night. "It's great to know rock music still has a place on MTV," said lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong before thanking the band's record label and fans.
Introduced as Rock 'n' Roll's version of Jay-Z and Beyonce, couple Joel Madden of Good Charlotte and Disney sweetheart Hilary Duff introduced Las Vegas rock stars, The Killers. The "Sin City" band, who won the award for Best New Artist in a Video, performed their hit song "Mr. Brightside" near the gorgeous pool at Hotel Victor in Miami.
The MTV2 Award was won by Chicago's Fall Out Boy for their hit "Sugar, We're Going Down." The quartet, who also performed during the VMA pre-show, thought that they were unworthy of the award and gave props to My Chemical Romance, who they thought the fans should have picked for their video "Helena." Although My Chemical Romance did lose, the New Jersey band did give a surprise performance of their breakthrough song.
Neptunes producer/N.E.R.D. member Pharrell introduced British sensation Coldplay to the VMAs stage to perform "Speed of Sound." Chris Martin jumped into the audience to get close to the band's fans, while the black piano he played on had three symbolic letters on the side: MTF.
One of the animated characters from the group Gorillaz accepted their Breakthrough Video award for "Feel Good INC." The supergroup beat out Eminem, Sarah McLachlan, U2 and Missy Elliott for the coveted honor.
The biggest award of the night went out to the most popular band of the year, Green Day. Mike Dirnt, Billie Joe Armstrong and Tre Cool had lots of people to thank including those artists who played alongside them at the Live 8 event in July. Dirnt even gave a shout out to the U.S. soldiers fighting in the war in Iraq by saying, "Let's bring them home safe."
